Building the PC of My Dreams
Building the PC of My Dreams

After a great deal of research, thought and agonising, I eventually got round to building the P.C of my dreams last month.

I had spent six months before this putting a little bit of money aside so that I could afford to build something that would be cutting edge, powerful and future-proof for at least a few months. I started out with a monster of a motherboard which was, to be honest, the very top end of what I had envisaged spending - in for a penny in for a pound and all that.

With a motherboard that was this good, it didn’t seem worth getting a feeble graphics card so I opted for the AMD Radeon HD 7970 Graphics Card which isn’t as indulgent as it might have been. Sure, I have got some outrageously detailed, smooth graphics but I could have spent a lot more. However, in hindsight perhaps I am glad that I didn’t. It comes with a clock speed of 925 MHz before you even consider over-clocking it. 3GB of memory certainly won’t be leaving me short any time soon either.

The power of music

I am partial to my music and do, from time to time, use my PC to capture music I have recorded on my digital eight track recorder to polish up and master for C.D. Having come with no less than two personal recommendations, I decided to invest in the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD sound card. It has one of the highest to signal-to-noise ratios that I could find and being from the Creative brand, it was clearly not going to be rubbish.

The keyboard for my old computer was okay. It was wireless and had a lot of hotkeys, some of which I used and others I scarcely noticed were there. It was grubby and probably contained a digestive biscuit’s worth of crumbs sat inside of it, but it had survived a glass of wine being spilt on it twice so I figured it must have been pretty tough. I hadn’t planned on getting a new keyboard but I hadn’t planned on NOT getting a keyboard, if you follow me. A couple of clicks later and I stumbled across the Corsair Vengeance K90 and I had fallen in love. Brushed aluminium and with the finest key switches that money can buy all backlit with over 90 L.E.Ds made it look like some sort of exciting flight to the moon.

The computer works really well and I wouldn’t do anything differently if I had the chance. I am currently running the sound from the sound card through my practically antique Marantz amp into my B & W speakers, which sounds awesome. I did somewhat overspend on the project and was horrified to see how little my old computer fetched online. I shall keep it as a second computer. I did have to sell my iphone and Squier telecaster guitar but to be honest I never really used either and I am too busy with my new computer to care.

No matter what you dreams are, it’s important that you go after them. Music Magpie is the perfect resource for those looking to get cash for their unwanted gadgets and were my first port of call when I decided to sell my iphone.
